What are Rooflights?

What are rooflights?

A rooflight is a type of window installed on the roof intended to increase the amount of natural light in a home's interior. Rooflights have both aesthetic and practical qualities that enable them to enhance your decor while at the same time reducing your monthly energy bills. If your home interior does not receive as much natural light as you would like, a rooflight can be an ideal solution.

The Different Types of Rooflights

All rooflights are either flat or pitched, but within those constraints, there are numerous types and sizes of rooflights that will dovetail with a wide range of architectural styles. The different types of rooflights include:

  • Pyramid Rooflights: This type of rooflight extends upward from a flat roof making a pyramid shape. It is well suited to both modern and period-style homes and is frequently found on commercial buildings. There are multiple panes of glass with a steel framework. The pyramid rooflight allows copious amounts of natural light to enter the space below.
  • Flat Rooflights: The flat rooflight is perhaps the closest rooflights come to being standard windows installed on the roof. They typically do not open and instead simply present a single window lying flat on the roof, although they are sometimes installed on pitched roofs as well. This is a simple, unobtrusive type of rooflight that works with any home style.
  • Ridged Rooflights: These are similar to the pyramid rooflight but are rectangular in shape with multiple panes rising toward a ridge that runs down the centre of the rectangle. Because of their size and shape, you will often find this type of rooflight installed on a flat roof above a conservatory or home extension. They are popular with commercial customers as well.
  • Automated Rooflights: The automated rooflight most commonly resembles the flat rooflight with the difference being that you are able to open the rooflight using a remote. These rooflights go with just about any decor and they can greatly enhance your home's ventilation enabling you to turn off the air conditioner now and then during the summer months.

Some other rooflight styles include Walk-on Rooflights, Conservation Rooflights and Contemporary Rooflights.
