Rooflight Maintenance: Cleaning Tips

By Josh Hartim April 01, 2025 0 comments

Today's rooflights are light years ahead of those from just 30 years ago. But that doesn't mean they don't still need a modicum of maintenance. In this case "maintenance" refers to the need to clean your rooflights occasionally in order to keep them looking their best and providing optimal functionality. But just how does one clean a rooflight? That's what we're going to address below.

Steps to Effective Cleaning of Your Rooflights

Step 1: Only clean when the weather is right

You don't want to be up on the roof cleaning your rooflight when the sun is beating down. Not only will your water/soap dry too fast but you'll be subjected to uncomfortable levels of heat. Ideally, you'll choose a cloudy, dry and warm (not hot) day for cleaning.

Step 2: Make sure you have the right equipment

You'll likely need a ladder to access the roof. Make sure it's sturdy and that you've placed it in a way that it won't slip out from under you. Also, wear rubber gloves and non-slip shoes. If the rooflights are 20 or 30 feet in the air, hire a professional to clean them.

Step 3: Remove all loose material on and around the rooflight

This includes small branches, twigs, leaves and anything else that's accumulated around the rooflight. Once the area is clear you can start cleaning.

Step 4: Don't use harsh detergents

Always use a mild detergent on your rooflights, avoiding harsh chemicals such as bleach or ammonia as these will promote streaking. They may also negatively affect the sealant around the rooflight frame.

Step 5: Use only soft cleaning tools

That means a soft sponge, a clean microfibre cloth and, in the case of stubborn dirt, a soft bristle brush. No matter what, don't push too hard on the glass. That could lead to scratches or even cracks in the surface.

Step 6: Dry the glass to prevent streaks

If you let the window dry by itself you're likely to see streaks when you look up from inside your home. Use a clean microfibre towel instead and make sure you dry thoroughly, removing any smudges and smears.
