It wasn't all that long ago that rooflights were exclusively non-opening. Not anymore. Today, virtually every style of rooflight is available with panels that open. That doesn't mean fixed (non-opening) rooflights are obsolete though. Far from it. There are definite advantages to both types and in this guide, we'll examine the pros and cons of fixed vs. opening rooflights.
Fixed Rooflight Pros
- Fixed rooflights don't consume any power like motorised rooflights do.
- You don't have to worry about energy loss around panels that open.
- Beyond cleaning, they require virtually no maintenance.
- There is very little that can go wrong with a fixed rooflight.
- Fixed rooflights are considered safer than opening rooflights.
- They cost less than opening rooflights.
- You don't have to worry about heavy weather damage as the panels are more tightly sealed.
Fixed Rooflight Cons
- Obviously, a fixed rooflight doesn't offer much in terms of ventilation.
- Because they won't open you may have lots of heat trapped inside on hot summer days.
- You can't gloat to your friends while you show them how to remotely open and close your rooflights.
- When some panels open you may be able to clean most or all of the panels from inside your home. You can't do that with fixed rooflights.
Opening Rooflight Pros
- The most obvious benefit of opening rooflights is that they create outstanding ventilation.
- That enhanced ventilation will purge musty and foul odours from your home.
- Because you can open and close them you have greater control over your indoor environment.
- Being able to ventilate your home will reduce dampness and fend off mould and mildew. Learn more about the benefits of ventilation from the Energy Saving Trust.
- Depending on the style you may be able to reach out and clean most or all of the rooflight's exterior from inside your home.
Opening Rooflight Cons
- The more moving parts a thing has the more things that can go wrong.
- The hinges, motors, insulation and any sensors will need to be properly maintained.
- Some parts may need to be replaced over time.
- If the seal around an opening panel is compromised it can lead to heat loss.
- Rooflights that open can be a temptation for would-be intruders.
- Opening rooflights will cost more than fixed rooflights.
